TIA Standards Updates Q3 – 2022

TIA Standards Engineering Committee Activities:

TIA’s TR engineering committees have been hard at work with ongoing standards development meetings and leadership elections.

TR-14 Structural Standards for Communication and Small Wind Turbine Support Structures Committee

TR-14 will hold their upcoming in-person in St. Petersburg, FL on October 5-6, 2022. They will also hold their TR-14 leadership elections during the full committee meeting on October 6, 2022, for the chair and vice chair positions. In addition, they continue to have monthly TR-14 TG3 ANSI/TIA 222-I and TR-14 TG7 322-A ad hoc task groups meetings. Click HERE to learn more about TR-14.

TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Systems Committee

TR-42 will hold their upcoming in-person committee meeting the week of October 3-7, 2022, in St. Petersburg, FL. Their next meeting will take place the week of January 20 – February 4, 2023 (location TBD). Click HERE to learn more about TR-42.

TR-60 ICT Lifecycle Management Committee

TR-60 will hold their meetings on a quarterly basis while both the TR-60.B Subcommittee and TR-60 TSB Working Group meetings continue to meet monthly. The next TR-60.B Subcommittee Meeting is scheduled for October 20, 2022 and will kick-start work on TIA-5077-1 (ICT Lifecycle Management: Information Management Process – Technology). Click HERE to learn more about TR-60.

TIA also recently released the new position paper “TIA TR-60 ICT Lifecycle Management: An Industry-Driven Standard for Reducing Cost and Risk” that describes the challenge and opportunity that comes with lifecycle management and how a new standard can help organizations regain control and visibility across their ICT network infrastructure. IEC International Standards Activities:

TIA is the US TAG Administrator to the following IEC Committees and three ISO/IEC/ JTC 1/ SC 25 Working Groups that develop standards for the ICT industries.

  • TC/SC46-cables, wires, waveguides, RF Connectors, RF and microwave passive components and accessories-
  • TC/SC76- Optical radiation safety and laser equipment
  • SC/SC86-Fibre Optics-
  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25 – Interconnection of information technology equipment
  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25/WG 1-Home Electronic System
  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25/WG 3-Customer Premises Cabling
  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25/WG 4-Interconnection of Computer Systems and Attached Equipment
  • SyC Smart Cities- Electrotechnical aspects of Smart Cities

The summary of activities and engagement is worth mentioning particularly for the USNC TAG ( ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25 – Interconnection of information technology equipment) which has a total of 20 open projects. The committee is TIA’s TR-42 counterpart, with the same project leaders leading both US TAG and IEC standard activities.  The other Committees whose projects and standards align with TIA’s TR-42 are the following Technical Committee and Sub-Committees:

  • TC86- Fibre Optics
  • SC86A- (Fibres and cables),
  • SC86B- (Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components),
  • SC86C- Fibre optic systems and active devices

To increase productivity of all these engaged committees, the US TAG meetings are now held in conjunction with TIA TR-42 Meetings. There were 4 US TAG meetings in June, three in July, and four in August. The number of meetings held so far underscores the importance of why our members are involved in standards development for cabling infrastructure in premises and commercial buildings.

With TIA members leading important discussions, the number of ballots and working documents processed via TIA Connect has increased due to the efficiency of the system that was launched two years ago. Members are now far more capable of communicating and sharing their industry views, as well as U.S. position views that are formed via consensus building.
