TIA Applauds FCC Draft Order Modernizing Network Discontinuance and Notice Rules

Arlington, VA (March 19, 2025) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the trusted industry association for the connected world, applauds the Federal Communications Commission’s release of a draft Report and Order that, if adopted, would modernize outdated network discontinuance and notice requirements and better align Commission rules with today’s communications technologies.

“By updating rules that no longer align with how today’s communications networks are built and operated, the Commission has taken a practical step toward supporting continued infrastructure investment and economic activity,” said Melissa Newman, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at TIA. “These changes give providers greater flexibility to direct resources toward deploying secure, resilient, next‑generation network equipment that supports evolving consumer and enterprise needs.”

TIA appreciates the Commission’s recognition that regulatory frameworks must keep pace with technological change. Aligning regulatory policy with modern network architecture allows providers to prioritize investment in current and future‑ready infrastructure on top of existing solutions provided by industry for a smooth transition from legacy networks at a reduced cost with minimal disruption.

As a result, these updates support improved network performance, reliability, and access to advanced communications services for U.S. consumers and businesses, while providing a more predictable environment for ongoing infrastructure investment. TIA looks forward to continuing its work with the Administration to advance trusted, high‑speed, and resilient communications networks that serve the nation’s economic and connectivity goals.
