Leading Standards Organizations TIA and UL Sign Agreement to Jointly Advance Global Safety Standards

TIA and UL will explore new opportunities for collaboration on new safety standards and encourage joint stakeholder participation in standards development projects

Arlington, VA (June 11, 2019) – Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global standards development body, and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks today announced a new agreement to advance collaboration on safety standards.

This agreement furthers cooperation between two of the largest and most impactful standards-making bodies in the country to help ensure quality and safety for the technology of tomorrow.

“Underwriters Laboratories is pleased to enter into this agreement with TIA and we look forward to sharing information between our organizations to advance the development of effective safety standards,” said Phil Piqueira, vice president, standards, UL. “MOUs with TIA and other standards development organizations help expand our knowledge base and drive utilization of best practices in ways that are mutually beneficial—which helps our organization achieve its mission of working for a safer world.”

“As the pace of technology continues to accelerate, developing timely and effective safety standards to accompany those technologies is more important than ever before,” said David Bain, vice president, standards, TIA. “TIA’s engineering committees are on the forefront of change, creating standards that enable safety and reliability in information and communications technology.  We are looking forward to collaboration with UL to further improve quality and safety through existing and new standards projects.”

TIA and UL will share information, insights and knowledge about their standards activities, work together to identify and analyze areas of safety standards overlap and explore opportunities for collaboration on potential safety standards. At the same time, the two organizations will facilitate stakeholder participation in each other’s standards development processes and support co-publication efforts.

For more information about the MOU, contact Deborah Prince, UL Standards Program Manager. For more information about UL Standards, visit www.UL.com/Standards.

A major function of TIA is the writing and maintenance of voluntary industry standards and specifications. These activities are carried out by the volunteer members of TIA engineering committees. Recent meeting reports, agendas and notices for upcoming meetings, as well as links to some of the most popular standards from each committee are available on the public engineering committee pages. Interested parties submit a TIA Engineering Committee Application to join.
