President Invokes Tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China
Arlington, VA (February 1, 2025) – The Telecommunications Industry Association—the trusted industry association for the connected world—today released a statement in response to President Trump’s tariff announcement.
TIA SVP Government Affairs, Melissa Newman stated:
“TIA supports the Trump Administration’s goals of stopping fentanyl smuggling and fostering a robust manufacturing economy in the United States by confronting unfair trade practices. These are issues that impact every American and we agree with the Administration that they must be tackled, and fast. We are, however, concerned that President Trump’s decision to unilaterally raise tariffs on products coming from Canada, Mexico, and China without a full analysis of the effect these higher duties could result in, including higher prices for American consumers and retaliatory actions against American businesses. The telecommunications industry is in the process of broadband deployments designed to connect all Americans to secure, reliable internet, and we worry that this decision could unintentionally reduce the efficacy of federal investments in these critical deployments at the taxpayer’s expense. We look forward to working closely with the Trump Administration to solve these important issues in a manner that ensures the U.S. telecommunications industry maintains the necessary conditions to do its duty and keep America connected.”
