TIA Hosts First Cabling Systems Committee Meeting of 2020 and Welcomes New Leaders

TIA’s TR-42 Committee met the week of January 27th to elect officers and plan out work for the year ahead. We had a productive week in New Orleans hearing from our members and partners and shaping the committee’s leadership and goals for 2020.

The meetings were filled with substantive presentations, liaison reports, and discussions during which committees progressed the development of standards. The presenters focused on the importance of embracing 5G and new technology – like edge data centers, artificial intelligence, and private networks – that require updated, high-functioning, comprehensive standards. Highlights included:

  • TR-60 ICT Lifecycle Management: Jerry Bowman from Square Mile Systems, Inc. spoke at lunch on Thursday about how he believes TR-42 and TR-60 can work together to help resolve technology management issues emerging with the rapid introduction and installation of new technology over the last 10 years. (Note: the next TR-60 meeting will be on February 20, 2020. For more information, please contact David Bain at dbain@tiaonline.org.)
  • Edge Data Center Working Group: TIA’s Jacques Fluet talked about the progress the Edge Data Center Working Group is making to release an initial set of eight briefing papers that outline considerations for creating standards for these new types of data centers.
  • Elections: The Committee also voted to elect the 2020 TR-42 Committee and Subcommittee leadership:
    • Greg Sandels, OFS, was re-elected Chair of TR-42
    • Henry Franc, Belden, was re-elected as TR-42 Vice-Chair
    • Patrick Van Vickle, Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Corporation, was re-elected Chair of TR-42.12
    • Roman Shubochkin, OFS, was re-elected Vice-Chair of TR-42.12.

Scott Payton, Technical Director at Global Data Center Engineering (GDCE), stated that “participation in detailed discussions of the various standards proved fascinating” and he especially liked “the depth of understanding of fiber and copper.”

Diane Forbes with NIS Consulting Firm appreciated “learning more about the newly-forming group TR-60 ICT Lifecycle Management” and the “opportunity to connect to industry experts on challenges that I’ve been facing in the field.”

As the leading standards body for telecom cabling infrastructure, we are proud to welcome our new and returning officers for the exciting work ahead in 2020 – see below for a full list.
