TIA Files Comments in Support of NIST Cybersecurity Framework

Arlington, Va. (February 23, 2016) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today expressed support for the cybersecurity framework proposed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  In comments filed in response to NIST’s request for information on its Cybersecurity Framework, TIA said the Framework has received a positive response from its members.

TIA CEO Scott Belcher issued the following statement:

“TIA has been a strong advocate for the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and especially of the flexible approach offered by its public-private partnership.

“Since its inception two years ago, our members have reported positive experiences where the Framework has been adopted. It is serving as an important tool to aid industry in developing a common language and approach for dealing with cyber risks. For this reason, our comments to NIST make it clear that it would be premature to pursue significant updates to the Framework’s methodology or approach.

“Rather, NIST should focus on advancing the Framework and its underlying approach as we move further into a connected world where security considerations are arising in many non-critical infrastructure arenas. In our comments, we encourage NIST to promote the Framework’s voluntary, industry-led methodology among federal and state agencies, and internationally in order to minimize country-specific requirements facing U.S. businesses.”
