TIA Applauds Bipartisan Agreement on USMCA

Arlington, VA (December 10, 2019) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today issued the following statement in response to the announcement of a bipartisan agreement to pass the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA):

David Stehlin, TIA’s Chief Executive Officer, issued the following statement:

“TIA applauds the hard work by members of Congress and the Office of United States Trade Representative to come to a bipartisan agreement to update America’s trade agreements with Mexico and Canada to bring these agreements into the 21st century and create desperately needed rules of the road for the digital economy.

The USMCA strengthens American competitiveness and innovation by prohibiting the forced transfer of source code and algorithms, banning forced localization of ICT infrastructure, and ending requirements for costly and duplicative product testing and certification. The agreement’s risk-based approach to cybersecurity and new protections for trade secrets are also vital for digital trade and industry competitiveness. TIA urges the House of Representatives and the Senate to swiftly pass legislation formalizing congressional support for the USMCA.”
