Rule Change will Enhance U.S. Standards Leadership, says TIA

Arlington, VA (June 15, 2020) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today issued a statement in reaction to the announcement from the Department of Commerce which clarifies that U.S. companies are not restricted by export controls on Huawei in the context of most standards development activities.

TIA CEO Dave Stehlin issued the following statement:

“TIA welcomes today’s action by the Commerce Department to change burdensome export control rules, a step that will facilitate the ability of U.S. firms to participate in and lead global standards development. American ICT companies must be at the table as the international community works to establish new standards for future technologies like 5G.

Moving forward, TIA welcomes the opportunity to deepen the dialogue on standards development and to more broadly clarify that export controls do not apply to standards development activities. Without this clarity, U.S. technological leadership is at risk of falling behind at a critical time, as the world will continue to develop the technical specifications that underpin global technology, with or without us.”
